Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 68
शौचं तु द्विविधं प्रोक्तं बाह्यमाभ्यन्तरं तथा । मृज्जलाभ्यां स्मृतं बाह्यं मनःशुद्धिस्तथान्तरम् ॥
śaucaṃ tu dvividhaṃ proktaṃ bāhyamābhyantaraṃ tathā | mṛjjalābhyāṃ smṛtaṃ bāhyaṃ manaḥśuddhistathāntaram ||
Śauca (purity) is twofold: external (bāhya) through earth and water (mṛjjalābhyām), and internal (ābhyantara) through purification of the mind (manaḥśuddhi). This dual framework — physical and mental cleanliness — parallels the yoga understanding that outer impurity reflects and reinforces inner impurity, and that both must be addressed. Physical purification (śauca) supports but cannot substitute for the inner work.
