Tṛtīya-prakaraṇam (Āsana) · Verse 8

एकं पादमथैकस्मिन्विन्यस्योरुणि संस्थितम् । इतरस्मिंस्तथा चोरुं वीरासनमुदाहृतम् ॥

ekaṃ pādamathaikasminvinyasyoruṇi saṃsthitam | itarasmiṃstathā coruṃ vīrāsanamudāhṛtam ||

The verse meticulously describes vīrāsana, a foundational āsana within the Yājñavalkya system, emphasizing a posture of formidable strength. The specific instruction – placing one foot on one thigh and the other on the opposite – establishes a deliberate and controlled engagement with the body’s structure. This isn’t merely a seated position, but a deliberate act of grounding, intended to cultivate stability and resilience. The term vīra itself, translated as ‘hero,’ reflects this intention, suggesting the practitioner’s journey is one of courageous perseverance, mirroring the qualities of a warrior. The positioning of the feet relative to the perineum is crucial for establishing a precise energetic alignment, laying the groundwork for subsequent practices such as prāṇāyāma.
