Tṛtīya-prakaraṇam (Āsana) · Verse 17

सर्वे चाभ्यन्तरा रोगा विनश्यन्ति विषाणि च । यमैश्च नियमैश्चैव आसनैश्च सुसंयुता ॥

sarve cābhyantarā rogā vinaśyanti viṣāṇi ca | yamaiśca niyamaiścaiva āsanaiśca susaṃyutā ||

Verse 17 establishes a crucial synergy within the foundational practices of Yājñavalkya’s system. The declaration that ‘roga’ (internal diseases) and ‘viṣāṇ’ (poisons) are destroyed underscores the yogic understanding of illness not merely as a physical ailment, but as a consequence of mental and emotional imbalances. The conjunction of the yamas and niyamas – ethical restraints and disciplines – alongside āsana (postures) serves as the primary means of neutralizing these internal corruptions. The āsana provides the stable foundation, allowing the yamas and niyamas to take root and their effects to be fully realized, acting as a corrective force upon the disturbed prāṇa. This verse highlights the integral nature of the preparatory work, demonstrating that true health, both physical and mental, is inextricably linked to the cultivation of ethical conduct and disciplined bodily postures.
