Pañcama-prakaraṇam (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 9

त्रिकालस्नानसंयुक्तः स्वधर्मनिरतः सदा । वेदान्तश्रवणं कुर्वंस्तस्मिन्योगं समभ्यसेत् ॥

rikālasnānasaṃyuktaḥ svadharmanirataḥ sadā | vedāntaśravaṇaṃ kurvaṃsttasminyogaṃ samabhyaset ||

Verse 9 articulates the interwoven requirements for effective yogic practice, revealing a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between ritual, knowledge, and action. The instruction to “Endowed with bathing at three times, always dedicated to his own dharma” immediately establishes a framework of disciplined conduct. The thrice-daily bathing is not merely a hygienic practice but a symbolic purification, designed to cleanse the nāḍī system and prepare the body for the exertion of prāṇa. Simultaneously, “always dedicated to his own dharma” signifies a commitment to fulfilling one’s unique purpose in life, aligning actions with cosmic order. Having “listened to Vedānta” – the Upanishadic wisdom – indicates the importance of intellectual understanding as a foundation for practice; the ātman must be informed by the profound truths revealed by the Brahman. Therefore, the practitioner should then “there he should practice yoga,” suggesting a synthesis of intellectual and experiential knowledge, a moving from conceptual understanding to embodied dhyāna.
