Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 1

याज्ञवल्क्यं मुनिश्रेष्ठं सर्वज्ञं ज्ञाननिर्मलम् । सर्वशास्त्रार्थतत्त्वज्ञं सदा ध्यानपरायणम् ॥

yājñavalkyaṃ muniśreṣṭhaṃ sarvajñaṃ jñānanirmalam | sarvaśāstrārthatattvajñaṃ sadā dhyānaparāyaṇam ||

This opening verse is a maṅgalācaraṇa — an invocation paying homage to the sage Yājñavalkya before the teaching begins. The epithets are carefully chosen: muniśreṣṭha places him above all other sages, sarvajña attributes omniscience, jñānanirmala emphasizes the purity of his knowledge — untainted by ignorance or ego. The phrase sarvaśāstrārthatattvajña reveals him as one who has grasped not merely the letter but the inner truth (tattva) of every śāstra. The final epithet, sadā dhyānaparāyaṇam, portrays him as perpetually absorbed in meditation, establishing the contemplative ideal that frames the entire dialogue.
