Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 22

प्रवर्तकं भवेदेतत्पुनरावृत्तिहेतुकम् । कर्तव्यमिति विध्युक्तं कर्म कामविवर्जितम् ॥

pravartakaṃ bhavedetatpunarāvṛttihetukam | kartavyamiti vidhyuktaṃ karma kāmavivarjitam ||

The pravartaka path is elaborated: action that causes punarāvṛtti — repeated return, the cycle of rebirth. The irony is that even Vedic prescription (vidhyuktaṃ) can become binding if performed with desire. The key qualifier is kāmavivarjitam — free from desire. This does not mean rejecting Vedic duties but performing them without selfish attachment to results — a principle that became central to the Bhagavad Gītā’s karma yoga.
