Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 60
गुरवः पञ्च सर्वेषां चतुर्णां श्रुतिचोदिताः । माता पिता तथाचार्यो मातुलः श्वशुरस्तथा ॥
guravaḥ pañca sarveṣāṃ caturṇāṃ śruticoditāḥ | mātā pitā tathācāryo mātulaḥ śvaśurastathā ||
Five types of gurus are declared by śruti for all four varṇas: mother, father, teacher (ācārya), maternal uncle (mātula), and father-in-law (śvaśura). This broad definition of guru extends the reverence owed to teachers beyond the formal spiritual preceptor to include family members who shape one’s life and conduct.
