Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 35
क्षत्रियश्च चरेदेवमासंन्यासाश्रमात्सदा । वानप्रस्थाश्रमादेवं चरेद्वैश्यः समाहितः ॥
kṣatriyaśca carādevamāsaṃnyāsāśramātsadā | vānaprasthāśramādevaṃ caredvaiśyaḥ samāhitaḥ ||
The āśrama restrictions by varṇa are specified: the kṣatriya should not take saṃnyāsa (renunciation), and the vaiśya should practice from the vānaprastha stage. These restrictions reflect concerns about social obligation — the king cannot abandon his duties of governance, and the merchant must complete his dharma before retreating. This conservative stance contrasts with later texts that opened renunciation more broadly.
