Karma-Sannyāsa Yoga · Verse 2

श्रीभगवानुवाच | संन्यासः कर्मयोगश्च निःश्रेयसकरावुभौ | तयोस्तु कर्मसंन्यासात्कर्मयोगो विशिष्यते

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | saṃnyāḥ karma-yogaś ca niḥśreyasa-karāv ubhau | tayos tu karma-saṃnyāsāt karma-yogo viśiṣyate

The Blessed Lord said: Both renunciation and the yoga of action lead to liberation. But of the two, the yoga of action is superior to the renunciation of actions.

Resolution of the apparent contradiction. Niḥśreyasa-karau — producers of supreme good, liberation — apply to both paths.

But karma-saṃnyāsāt — from renunciation of actions — karma-yogaḥ viśiṣyate — the yoga of action is superior. Why? External renunciation without inner transformation is evasion; the yoga of action purifies while one acts. It is more difficult but more complete.
