Jñāna Yoga · Verse 33

श्रेयान्द्रव्यमयाद्यज्ञान्निःश्रेयासकरः परः | कर्मभिरप्यद्रव्यमयैर्यज्ञविद्भिर्यथोचितैः

śreyān dravya-mayād yajñān niḥśreyāsa-karaḥ paraḥ | karmabhir apy adravya-mayair yajña-vidbhir yathocitaiḥ

Superior to material sacrifice is the sacrifice of knowledge, oh relative of the Kurus. All sacrifice is indeed action, but the sacrifice of knowledge is superior, oh conqueror of enemies.

Hierarchy of sacrifices. Dravya-mayāt — consisting of materials — is external, ritual sacrifice.

The sacrifice of jñāna — knowledge — is niḥśreyāsa-karaḥ — producer of supreme liberation, not just worldly benefits. All sacrifice involves karma — action — but the sacrifice of knowledge is paraḥ — superior — because it transforms the offerer themselves, not just external circumstances.
