Caturtha-prakaraṇam (Nāḍī-śuddhi) · Verse 9
आत्मस्थमनिलं विद्वानात्मस्थेनैव वह्निना । योगाभ्यासेन यः कुर्यात्समं वा न्यूनमेव वा ॥
ātmas thamanilaṃ vidvānātmas thenaiva vahninā | yogābhyāsena yaḥ kuryātsamaṃ vā nyūnameva vā ||
This verse presents a crucial technique within yoga – abhyasa – focused on the mastery of prāṇa, often translated as vital wind or breath. The imagery of “wind established in the Self” (atmanasthamanilam) signifies the initial state of the prāṇa – unrestrained, flowing outward, manifesting as the fluctuations of sensation and thought. The wise practitioner, through disciplined practice, seeks to diminish this outward flow, bringing the prāṇa back to a state of equilibrium within the ātman, the true Self. This is achieved by equating or reducing the outward movement of the vayu (wind) with the inner stillness of the agni (fire), representing the inherent, pure consciousness. The ultimate aim is to harmonize these opposing forces, ultimately leading to a deeper union with the ātman.
