Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 38
चतुर्णामाश्रमस्थानामहन्यहनि नित्यशः । विध्युक्तं कर्म कर्तव्यं कामसङ्कल्पवर्जितम् ॥
caturṇāmāśramasthānāmahanyahani nityaśaḥ | vidhyuktaṃ karma kartavyaṃ kāmasaṅkalpavarjitam ||
Across all four āśramas, the universal principle holds: prescribed action (vidhyuktaṃ karma) must be performed daily (ahanyahani nityaśaḥ), free from desire and intention (kāmasaṅkalpavarjitam). This is the niṣkāma karma principle applied universally — not as optional ideal but as fundamental duty. The consistency of this requirement across āśramas suggests that the inner disposition matters more than the external form of action.
