Tṛtīya-prakaraṇam (Āsana) · Verse 14
मेढ्रादुपरि निक्षिप्य सव्यं गुल्फं तथोपरि । गुल्फान्तरं च निक्षिप्य मुक्तासनमिदं तु वा ॥
meḍhrādupari nikṣipya savyaṃ gulphaṃ tathopari | gulphāntaraṃ ca nikṣipya muktāsanamidaṃ tu vā ||
The verse meticulously details a specific variation of muktasana, a posture often associated with liberation – signified by the term itself. The instruction to place the left ankle above the penis, and also above between the ankles, suggests a deliberate manipulation of the prāṇa flow, aiming to release tension within the pelvic region. This precise positioning is not merely a physical adjustment; it’s a targeted application of āsana designed to affect the subtle energetic channels, potentially unlocking a state of heightened awareness. The inclusion of this particular variation highlights the Yogācāras’ emphasis on individualized practice, acknowledging that flexibility and physiological constitution will dictate the optimal method for achieving this specific release – a core tenet of adapting the yoga system to the unique ātman of the practitioner. This demonstrates a nuanced approach to posture, reflecting the belief that āsana is a tool for shaping consciousness.
