Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 30

क्षत्रियस्य त्रयः प्रोक्ता द्वावेकौ वैश्यशूद्रयोः । अधीत्य वेदं वेदार्थं साङ्गोपाङ्गं विधानतः ॥

kṣatriyasya trayaḥ proktā dvāvekau vaiśyaśūdrayoḥ | adhītya vedaṃ vedārthaṃ sāṅgopāṅgaṃ vidhānataḥ ||

The āśrama system is applied differentially by varṇa: brāhmaṇas may adopt all four, kṣatriyas three, vaiśyas and śūdras fewer. The requirement to study the Veda (adhītya vedam) with its aṅgas and upāṅgas — auxiliary disciplines — applies variably. This hierarchical access reflects the historical social context while simultaneously affirming that yoga’s essential practices are available across varṇas.
