Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 11
समाहितमना गार्गि शृणु त्वं गदतो मम । इत्युक्त्वा ब्रह्मविच्छ्रेष्ठो याज्ञवल्क्यस्तपोनिधिः ॥
samāhitamanā gārgi śṛṇu tvaṃ gadāto mama | ityuktvā brahmavicchreṣṭho yājñavalkyastaponidhiḥ ||
The condition for receiving the teaching is stated: samāhitamanā — with a concentrated mind. This is not casual instruction; it requires the listener’s full absorption. The description of Yājñavalkya as brahmavicchreṣṭha and taponidhiḥ (treasure of austerities) reinforces his authority while the instruction śṛṇu — listen — echoes the traditional śravaṇa of the Vedāntic methodology: hearing from a qualified teacher.
