Tṛtīya-prakaraṇam (Āsana) · Verse 3

jānorvorantare samyakkṛtvā pādatale ubhe | ṛjukāyaḥ sukhāsīnaḥ svastikaṃ tatpracakṣate ||
The description of svastikāsana – “Placing both soles of the feet properly between the knees and thighs, with the body straight, sitting comfortably” – reveals a fundamental understanding of posture rooted in geometric harmony. The instruction to “place both soles of the feet properly between the knees and thighs” establishes a precise spatial relationship, designed to create an internal stability. The emphasis on a “straight body” and “sitting comfortably” highlights the crucial balance between physical support and ease, a principle vital for sustained āsana practice. This posture, as described, is fundamentally about establishing a foundational āsana which allows for the subsequent engagement of prāṇāyāma and dhyāna, providing a stable seat for the cultivation of inner awareness. The directness of the language suggests a practical, instructional approach – the Yājñavalkya prioritizes demonstrable technique.
