Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 57
ऋतावृतौ स्वदारेषु सङ्गतिर्या विधानतः । ब्रह्मचर्यं तु तत्प्रोक्तं गृहस्थाश्रमवासिनम् ॥
ṛtāvṛtau svadāreṣu saṅgatiryā vidhānataḥ | brahmacaryaṃ tu tatproktaṃ gṛhasthāśramavāsinam ||
For the gṛhastha (householder), brahmacarya is redefined: conjugal union with one’s own wife (svadāreṣu) at the proper time (ṛtāvṛtau) and according to prescription (vidhānataḥ) is considered brahmacarya. This contextual redefinition is crucial — it shows that the yamas are not rigid absolutes but are applied with wisdom according to one’s station in life. The principle of right timing and right relationship transforms physical intimacy into dharmic conduct.
