Pañcama-prakaraṇam (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 5

स्वाश्रमस्थः सदाचारः विद्वद्भिश्च सुशिक्षितः । तपोवनं सुसम्प्राप्य फलमूलोदकान्वितम् ॥

svāśramasthaḥ sadācāraḥ vidvadbhiśca suśikṣitaḥ | tapovanaṃ susamprāpya phalamūlodakānvitam ||

Verse 5 emphasizes the critical preparatory stage within the yogic path, demanding a specific environment and mindset. The establishment of the āśrama, a dedicated dwelling and space for practice, signifies a commitment to disciplined living and a severance from worldly distractions. Coupled with sada-chāra, or good conduct, this creates a foundation of ethical stability. The description of having “reached a beautiful forest of austerities,” or tapas, – a potent term signifying disciplined effort and purification – reveals a significant level of commitment, mirroring the intensity often found within rāja yoga. Importantly, this forest is ‘provided with fruits, roots and water,’ suggesting that the yogī has not only undertaken arduous practice but also secured the resources, both physical and spiritual, needed to sustain it. The emphasis on being ‘well instructed by the wise’ highlights the necessity of guidance and knowledge transmission, a core component of the yogic tradition, particularly as articulated by the guru.
