Tṛtīya-prakaraṇam (Āsana) · Verse 5
एतच्च स्वस्तिकं प्रोक्तं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् । सव्ये दक्षिणगुल्फं तु पृष्ठपार्श्वे निवेशयेत् ॥
etacca svastikaṃ proktaṃ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam | savye dakṣiṇagulphaṃ tu pṛṣṭhapārśve niveśayet ||
The verse designates svastikasana, a term connoting not merely a physical posture but a potent instrument for the cessation of all sins. The specific instruction – “the right ankle should be placed at the back of the left side” – indicates a deliberate imbalance, a slight distortion of the body’s natural axis. This destabilization, rather than being a hindrance, is precisely what svastikasana aims to achieve, mirroring the yogic principle that true transformation arises from disrupting established patterns of thought and feeling. It’s a technique of creating a subtle agitation within the prāṇa, prompting a deeper engagement with the process of pratyāhāra, drawing the senses inward to a state of heightened awareness. The term ‘destroyer of all sins’ suggests a purification process, a gradual erosion of karmic attachments through sustained, disciplined practice.
