Chapter 11 · Verse 4

निरपेक्षो निर्विकारो निर्भरः शीतलाशयः

nirapekṣo nirvikāro nirbharaḥ śītalāśayaḥ

Without expectation, without modification, without burden, with a serene mind — such is the sage. There is nothing to accept and nothing to reject. Be aware of this and be free. Chapter 11 paints the portrait of the sage. The serenity described is not passivity but the absence of identification. Without expectation because there is no separate future; without modification because Ātman does not change; without burden because nothing is “mine.” Freedom lies in awareness, not in achievement.
