Chapter 3 · Verse 1
अष्टावक्र उवाच
aṣṭāvakra uvāca
Aṣṭāvakra resumes the teaching, now addressing the qualities of the realized sage (jñānin). The three marks — freedom from desire (nirāśā), constant contentment (sarvadā tṛpta), and absence of thought (nirvicāra) — are not prescriptions but descriptions. Where desire and dissatisfaction have vanished, sorrow (śoka) and craving (kāma) simply have no ground to arise. This verse answers Janaka’s opening question from chapter 1 about what distinguishes the wise person.
