Karma Yoga · Verse 12

इष्टान्भोगान्हि वो देवा दास्यन्ते यज्ञभाविताः | तैर्दत्तानप्रदायैभ्यो यो भुङ्क्ते स्तेन एव सः

iṣṭān bhogān hi vo devā dāsyante yajña-bhāvitāḥ | tair dattān apradāyaibhyo yo bhuṅkte stena eva saḥ

The gods, pleased by sacrifice, will grant you the desired enjoyments. But whoever enjoys these gifts without offering them to others, that one is certainly a thief.

The doctrine of stena — thief — defines ecological immorality. To enjoy resources without contributing to the order that produces them is cosmic theft.

Yajña-bhāvitāḥ — “manifested/pleased by sacrifice” — indicates that the devas respond to ritual offering or selfless action. The thief is not the one who enjoys, but the one who enjoys without reciprocity. This vision transforms ethics into spiritual ecology: every good received must circulate.
