Karma Yoga · Verse 22

न मे पार्थास्ति कर्तव्यं त्रिषु लोकेषु किञ्चन | नानवाप्तमवाप्तव्यं वर्त एव च कर्मणि

na me pārthāsti kartavyaṃ triṣu lokeṣu kiñcana | nānavāptam avāptavyaṃ varta eva ca karmaṇi

Oh Pṛthā, there is nothing that must be done in the three worlds, nothing to obtain that I have not obtained; nevertheless, I am dedicated to action.

Krishna reveals his own motivation. In the tṛīṇi lokāḥ — three worlds (terrestrial, intermediate, celestial) — nothing is lacking to Him.

Avāptavya — that to be obtained — is nothing for Him. Varta — “I am dedicated” — indicates continuous occupation. Why does the Supreme Being act? As example for the world. The perfect teacher teaches by being, not just by saying. The Lord’s action is līlā — divine play — not necessity.
