Karma Yoga · Verse 23

यदि ह्यहं न वर्तेयं जातु कर्मण्यतन्द्रितः | मम वर्त्मानुवर्तन्ते मनुष्याः पार्थ सर्वशः

yadi hy ahaṃ na varteyaṃ jātu karmaṇy atandritaḥ | mama vartmānuvartante manuṣyāḥ pārtha sarvaśaḥ

For if I were not always diligently dedicated to action, oh Pṛthā, all men would follow my path in all aspects.

Pedagogical reason for divine activity. Atandritaḥ — without negligence, diligent — indicates that not even the Lord can afford laxity in duty.

The effect of his inaction would be catastrophic: everyone would follow the vartman — path — of the Lord. If He stopped, all would stop. This establishes the importance of the ācārya — exemplary teacher — who must practice what he teaches.
