Prathamopadeśaḥ (Ṣaṭkarma) · Verse 4

सप्त साधनभूमीनां योगिनां योगसिद्धये | करणानि वरारोहे पवित्राणि महान्ति च ||

sapta sādhanabhūmīnāṃ yogināṃ yogasiddhaye | karaṇāni varārohe pavitrāni mahānti ca ||

The “seven instruments” (sapta karaṇāni) are the seven limbs (saptāṅga) of Gheraṇḍa’s system: ṣaṭkarma, āsana, mudrā, pratyāhāra, prāṇāyāma, dhyāna, and samādhi. Each corresponds to one “stage of sādhana” (sādhanabhūmi).

The expression “of elevated thighs” (varārohe) is a poetic epithet addressed to Caṇḍa Kāpālī, typical of Sanskrit dialogue style. Courtly language is not mere ornament; it establishes the respectful yet intimate relationship between teacher and disciple.

The enumeration of seven (not eight as in Patañjali) is one of the distinctive features of the Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā. Yama and niyama do not appear as separate limbs, but are assumed as the implicit basis of practice.
