Prathamopadeśaḥ (Ṣaṭkarma) · Verse 6
धौतिस्तु द्विविधा प्रोक्ता अन्तर्धौतिर्बहिस्तथा | वस्तिस्तु द्विविधा प्रोक्ता जले खेचर्यां तथैव च ||
dhautistu dvividhā proktā antardhautirbahistathā | vastistu dvividhā proktā jale khecaryāṃ tathaiva ca ||
Gheraṇḍa begins to detail the classifications of the ṣaṭkarmas. Dhauti, the internal cleansing, has two principal modalities. The distinction between internal and external refers to whether the cleansing is performed within the digestive tract or upon bodily surfaces.
Basti, the yogic enema, is also divided: jala basti (with water) and śuṣka basti or khecaryā (dry, using muscular contractions). This lesser-known variant in the West demonstrates the sophistication of the system: external means are not always required.
The systematic classification reflects the scientific attitude of these texts. They do not content themselves with vague descriptions; they categorize, subdivide, and specify.
