Prathamopadeśaḥ (Ṣaṭkarma) · Verse 7

नेतिस्तु द्विविधा प्रोक्ता सूत्रचैकजलेऽपरा | त्राटकं नाभिमानं च कपालभातिस्तथैव च ||

netistu dvividhā proktā sūtracaikajale'parā | trāṭakaṃ nābhimānaṃ ca kapālabhātistathaiva ca ||

The classification continues. Neti, nasal cleansing, is practiced with a sūtra (special thread, traditionally of rubber or cotton) or with jala (salt water). Today, the water version (jal neti) is more common in the West, while sūtra neti requires more training.

The last three ṣaṭkarmas — trāṭaka (gaze fixation), nauli (abdominal massage), and kapālabhāti (skull-shining breath) — are mentioned here without subdivision, though variants are detailed later in the text.

The brevity of this verse contrasts with the length of those that follow, where each technique is described in meticulous detail.
