Prathamopadeśaḥ (Ṣaṭkarma) · Verse 10

वमनं चाप्यधः कुर्यादुदरामयशान्तये | वारिणा पूरितोदरश्चरेद्धौतिं यथाविधि ||

vamanaṃ cāpyadhaḥ kuryādudarāmayaśāntaye | vāriṇā pūritodaraścared dhautiṃ yathāvidhi ||

Here vamana dhauti or kunjala kriya is described, a cleansing technique involving ingestion of water and induced vomiting. The therapeutic goal (śānti) is “diseases of the abdomen” — digestive problems, excess mucus, acidity.

The phrase “downward” (adhaḥ) may refer to the direction of expulsion or to the body position. Traditionally one drinks several glasses of warm salt water and then induces vomiting by stimulating the base of the tongue.

The caution “according to the rules” (yathāvidhi) is crucial. These practices require initial supervision and have specific contraindications (not for those with hypertension, heart problems, etc.).
