Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 19

उभौ हस्तौ च जानूर्वोः कृत्वा बाह्ये व्यवस्थितौ | सिंहवत्किंकरौ कृत्वा जिह्वां दंष्ट्रौ च दर्शयेत् ||

ubhau hastau ca jānūrvoḥ kṛtvā bāhye vyavasthitau | siṃhavat kiṃkarau kṛtvā jihvāṃ daṃṣṭrau ca darśayet ||

The distinctive element of Siṃhāsana: the hands in claw form (siṃha-kiṃkara), the tongue extended, the teeth shown. It is a posture that includes facial and manual mudrā.

This is not just a passive meditation position; it is an active practice of assuming power. The yogi becomes a lion, embodying its ferocity and majesty.

The complete practice includes simhagarjanā — the lion’s roar. With the tongue extended, one exhales forcefully producing an “ha” sound that cleanses the entire throat and sinuses. It is a complete therapy for the cervical area.
