Bhujaṅgāsana — the serpent posture. The serpent is a symbol of kuṇḍalinī energy, of transformation, of rebirth through shedding the skin. It is one of the most powerful animals in yogic symbolism.
“Destroyer of great sins.” The serpent has the power of deep purification. Its capacity for total renewal is transmitted to the practitioner.
It is the backward extension par excellence. From face down, the practitioner lifts the chest and head, keeping the legs firmly on the ground. It is the fundamental counterposture of Paścimottānāsana.
