Ekādaśa-prakaraṇam (Upadeśa) · Verse 8
गुरोः प्रसादात् तज्ज्ञानं जायते नात्र संशयः । गुरुरेव परं ब्रह्म गुरुरेव परं तपः ॥
guroḥ prasādāt tajjñānaṃ jāyate nātra saṃśayaḥ | gurureva paraṃ brahma gurureva paraṃ tapaḥ ||
This verse powerfully articulates the critical role of the guru within the Yogic path, framing him as both the conduit for knowledge and the embodiment of ultimate reality. The phrase guru-prasada – ‘through the grace of the guru’ – signifies that the awakening of tattva-jñāna (knowledge of reality) is not a matter of individual effort alone, but is bestowed through the guru’s wisdom and the transmission of this knowledge. Importantly, the guru is defined as param-brahma (supreme Brahman) and param-tapas (supreme austerity), suggesting that the guru’s very being embodies the highest forms of spiritual practice. This elevates the guru beyond a mere teacher, positioning him as a living representation of the divine, a focal point for transformation. The verse stresses that the path of tapas – disciplined effort – is not simply a physical undertaking but is inherently linked to the guru’s own selfless devotion, making it a potent force for liberation.
