Ekādaśa-prakaraṇam (Upadeśa) · Verse 9

गुरुरेव परं ज्ञानं गुरुरेव परा गतिः । तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नित्यं यः श्रद्धां कुरुते सदा ॥

gurureva paraṃ jñānaṃ gurureva parā gatiḥ | tasmai śrīgurave nityaṃ yaḥ śraddhāṃ kurute sadā ||

This verse presents a profound ontological assertion, establishing the guru as the very essence of samādhi and the ultimate destination of yogic practice. The statement “Gururev param jnanam Gururev para gatir” – “The guru himself is supreme knowledge, the guru himself is the supreme goal” – transcends a simple teacher-student relationship, framing the guru as the embodied realization of Brahman itself. Shraddha – faith – is not merely intellectual assent, but a deep, unwavering trust in this embodied manifestation of the divine, a trust that fuels the practitioner’s journey toward the cessation of suffering. This echoes the Upaniṣadic emphasis on ātman as identical with Brahman, but here, that identification is concretized and accessible through the guru’s presence, offering a tangible pathway for the aspirant to move beyond conceptual understanding and directly experience liberation’s truth. The consistent cultivation of this shraddha is thus crucial for navigating the subtle shifts in consciousness that mark the progression of dhyāna, ultimately leading to the dissolution of the false self.
