Dvādaśa-prakaraṇam (Kuṇḍalinī) · Verse 2

यमं नियममासनं प्राणायामं प्रत्याहारं च धारणां ध्यानं समाधिं च । एतदष्टाङ्गयोगं प्रोक्तं योगिनां मोक्षसिद्धये ॥

yamaṃ niyamamāsanaṃ prāṇāyāmaṃ pratyāhāraṃ ca dhāraṇāṃ dhyānaṃ samādhiṃ ca | etadaṣṭāṅgayogaṃ proktaṃ yogināṃ mokṣasiddhaye ||

This verse meticulously details the structure of the ashtanga-yoga, the eight-limbed system, presented as the means for achieving liberation. Each element – yama, niyama, āsana, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra, dhāraṇā, dhyāna, and samādhi – is listed with deliberate weight, signifying their essential interconnectedness within the yogic path. The phrasing “for the liberating perfection of yogīs” highlights the intended outcome: not merely existence, but a state of complete freedom from the limitations of the ego and the cycle of rebirth. The enumeration of these limbs represents a comprehensive methodology, a systematic progression designed to refine and ultimately unite the practitioner with the highest reality, a concept central to both the Upaniṣads and later elaborations within the yogic tradition.
