भृगु

Bhrigu

deva

One of the seven great sages (saptarṣi), patriarch of the Bhṛgu clan, and a seminal figure in Vedic and epic literature. His name derives from the root bhraj — to shine, to radiate.

In the Bhagavad-gītā, Bhṛgu is cited as a representative of the brāhmaṇa seers who received the sacred knowledge. The Bhṛguvallī section of the Taittirīya Upaniṣad bears his name, presenting a hierarchical meditation on Brahman.

The Bhṛgus were associated with fire (agni) and ritual expertise. The Mahābhārata recounts the conflict between the Bhṛgu and Aṅgira seer-lineages — a narrative encoding the tensions between different Vedic schools and their approaches to sacrifice and knowledge.
