Sāṅkhya Yoga · Verse 15

"यं हि न व्यथयन्त्येते पुरुषं पुरुषर्षभ | समदुःखसुखं धीरं सोऽमृतत्वाय कल्पते"

"yaṃ hi na vyathayanty ete puruṣaṃ puruṣarṣabha | sama-duḥkha-sukhaṃ dhīraṃ so 'mṛtatvāya kalpate"

That person whom these do not agitate, oh bull among men, that wise one for whom pleasure and pain are equal, becomes fit for immortality

The goal is amṛtatva (immortality, state of amṛta, nectar). It is not temporal extension of personal existence but realization of the eternal ātman.

The condition: sama-duḥkha-sukham (for whom pain and pleasure are equal). Sama (same, equal) does not mean emotional indifference but stability — not fluctuating between euphoria and despair.

Dhīram (firm, stable) — the central quality of the yogin. Kalpate (becomes fit, is appropriate) suggests preparation, not automatism. Immortality is the result of maturation, not arbitrary reward.
