I am the father of this universe, the mother, the sustainer and the grandfather; the object of knowledge, the purifier, the syllable Om, and the Ṛg, Sāma and Yajur Vedas.

The Lord in His simultaneous maternal and paternal aspect. As pitā (father) He gives the bīja (seed); as mātā (mother) She gestates and nourishes. Dhātā — the sustainer, establisher — and pitāmahaḥ (grandfather) suggest eternal antiquity.

Vedyam — that which must be known — is the tattva or supreme principle. Pavitram (purifier) refers to both external (water, herbs) and internal (knowledge that purifies).

Oṃkāra — the sacred syllable Om — is the resonant sound of the Lord. The three Vedas (ṛk, sāma, yajur) represent all revealed wisdom.
