Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 4
मयूरः कुक्कुटः कूर्म उत्तानकूर्मकस्तथा | मण्डूकोत्तानमण्डूकौ वृक्षो गरुड एव च ||
mayūraḥ kukkuṭaḥ kūrma uttānakūrmakastathā | maṇḍūkottānamaṇḍūkau vṛkṣo garuḍa eva ca ||
More āsanas: mayūra (peacock — balance on forearms), kukkuṭa (cockerel), kūrma (tortoise), uttānakūrma (extended tortoise), maṇḍūka (frog), uttānamaṇḍūka (extended frog), vṛkṣa (tree — standing balance), garuḍa (eagle/lord of birds).
Animals are a constant source of inspiration for āsanas. Each creature embodies a quality the practitioner seeks to develop: the dignity of the peacock, the stability of the tortoise, the expansiveness of the tree.
The pairs “base/extended” (uttāna) suggest variations of intensity within the same form.
