Śivasaṃhitā 3.12

The verse establishes a direct causal link between serving the guru and obtaining the fruit of knowledge. Yatnena — «with effort, with care» — signals that pleasing the teacher is not a perfunctory gesture but a sustained, intentional practice. The compound vidyāmupāsate joins vidyā (illuminating knowledge) with upāsana (veneration, close attendance), effectively equating study with an act of devotion.

Vidyā derives from the root vid (to see, to know), the same root that gives us veda. It is not ordinary knowledge but transformative insight. Santoṣya, a causative participle from sam-tuṣ (to satisfy fully, to delight), implies that the disciple must generate genuine contentment in the teacher — not mere compliance, but active relational attunement.

Placed before the technical instructions on prāṇāyāma and āsana in Chapter Three, this verse asserts that no practice yields fruit without the correct relational framework. Yogic knowledge in the hatha tradition is not transmitted through texts alone; it flows through a living relationship whose quality determines whether the teaching takes root.
