Prakaraṇa 1 · Verse 21
वासनाक्षयम् आगम्य यत्रास्ते स हि जीवन्मुक्तः
vāsanākṣayam āgamya yatrāste sa hi jīvanmuktaḥ
One who arrives at the exhaustion of vāsanās, that one is a jīvanmukta
Jīvanmukta — liberated while living — is the central jewel of the Vāsiṣṭha. Not someone who has escaped the world; someone who has exhausted the vāsanās that kept them identified with the world. The body continues, the mind continues, circumstances continue. But the center of gravity has shifted: it is no longer in the personal identity but in the witnessing consciousness. The exhaustion of vāsanās is not suppression — it is understanding so deep that the seeds no longer germinate.
