Saptama-prakaraṇam (Dhāraṇā) · Verse 13

श्वासोच्छ्वासं समालोक्य ध्यानं कुर्याद्विचक्षणः । निरोधं कुरुते यस्तु स ध्यानी नात्र संशयः ॥

śvāsochvāsaṃ samālokya dhyānaṃ kuryādvicakṣaṇaḥ | nirodhaṃ kurute yastu sa dhyānī nātra saṃśayaḥ ||

The practical instruction in verse 13 focuses on the foundational technique of shvasa-uchchvasa, the observation of inhalation and exhalation, as the gateway to dhyāna. The ‘expert’ – the practitioner diligently following the prescribed path – uses this mindful attention as a stabilizing force, a method for quieting the restless prāṇa and preparing the mind for deeper contemplation. The term nirodha, meaning restraint, specifically refers to the controlled regulation of breath, a key component in calming the fluctuations of the mind, thus embodying a core yama practice. The emphatic declaration “here there is no doubt” (na atra samśaya) reinforces the certainty of the path when applied with proper understanding and consistent effort. This verse echoes the emphasis on sensory discipline found in the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, highlighting the crucial role of breath control in establishing a stable foundation for meditation.
