उत्कटासन
Utkaṭāsana
Powerful Posture (or Squat)
Sources: Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā 2.27
Classical Description
The Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā (2.27) describes:
“Supporting yourself on the tips of the toes, place the heels under the buttocks. This is Utkaṭāsana.”
This description indicates a deep squat posture, sustained on the tips of the toes, a form that differs from modern interpretations but represents the classical āsana as it was practiced.
Technique
- Stand with feet slightly apart
- Rise onto the tips of the toes
- Deeply flex the knees, descending into a squat
- The heels rise and rest under the buttocks
- The torso remains erect
- The hands may join in añjali (prayer gesture) in front of the chest
- Maintain balance on the front part of the feet
Benefits According to the Texts
The texts attribute to Utkaṭāsana:
- Extraordinary strengthening of thighs and calves
- Development of balance and stability
- Activation of internal fire (agni)
- Toning of leg muscles
- Preparation for postures requiring lower limb strength
- Stimulation of blood circulation in the legs
Notes
The name comes from utkaṭa, which means “fierce”, “powerful”, or “intense”. This classical āsana is considerably more challenging than many modern interpretations, as it requires balance on the tips of the toes in addition to leg strength. It develops the physical and mental endurance necessary for prolonged meditation practices.
