Caturthopadeśaḥ (Pratyāhāra) · Verse 4

योनिमुद्रा तथा शाम्भवी नाडीशुद्धिस्तथैव च | प्राणायामस्तथा ध्यानं प्रत्याहारः स उच्यते ||

yonimudrā tathā śāmbhavī nāḍīśuddhis tathaiva ca | prāṇāyāmas tathā dhyānaṃ pratyāhāraḥ sa ucyate ||

Reiteration of the five methods of pratyāhāra. The repetition underlines that these five techniques constitute the complete repertoire for sensory withdrawal according to Gheraṇḍa.

Pratyāhāra is the turning point where external yoga becomes internal. It is the gateway to deep meditative states.

For the modern practitioner, any of these five can be the starting point. What matters is not which one is practiced but that attention consistently withdraws from exterior to interior.
