Caturthopadeśaḥ (Pratyāhāra) · Verse 3
प्राणायामस्तथा ध्यानं पञ्चमं च प्रकीर्तितम् | एते पञ्च प्रत्याहारा योगिनां सिद्धिदायकाः ||
prāṇāyāmas tathā dhyānaṃ pañcamaṃ ca prakīrtitam | ete pañca pratyāhārā yogināṃ siddhidāyakāḥ ||
Completing the list of five pratyāhāras: Yoni mudrā, Śāmbhavī, nāḍīśodhana, prāṇāyāma, and dhyāna. These practices, in their aspect of withdrawing attention from the exterior, constitute pratyāhāra.
The inclusion of prāṇāyāma and dhyāna is interesting. It suggests that any practice that withdraws attention from outside toward inside functions as pratyāhāra.
All are “givers of perfection.” Sensory withdrawal is not escape from the world but preparation to know it more deeply from the center of being.
