Caturthopadeśaḥ (Pratyāhāra) · Verse 2

पञ्चधा प्रत्याहारः स्यात्तद्विधानमथोच्यते | योनिमुद्रा तथा शाम्भवी नाडीशुद्धिस्तथैव च ||

pañcadhā pratyāhāraḥ syāt tadvidhānam athocyate | yonimudrā tathā śāmbhavī nāḍīśuddhis tathaiva ca ||

Gheraṇḍa enumerates five types of pratyāhāra. Here he mentions three: Yoni mudrā, Śāmbhavī, and purification of nāḍīs (nāḍīśodhana).

These techniques were already mentioned in previous chapters but here they are presented specifically as methods of sensory withdrawal.

Pratyāhāra is not forced suppression of the senses but conscious reorientation of attention. The senses continue functioning; one simply does not follow every stimulus.
