Ṣaṣṭhopadeśaḥ (Dhyāna) · Verse 2
त्रिधा ध्यानं भवेद्यस्य तद्विधानमथोच्यते | स्थूलं ज्योतिर्मयं चैव सूक्ष्मं चैव त्रिधा स्मृतम् ||
tridhā dhyānaṃ bhaved yasya tadvidhānam athocyate | sthūlaṃ jyotirmayaṃ caiva sūkṣmaṃ caiva tridhā smṛtam ||
Gheraṇḍa classifies meditation into three types: Sthūla (gross/form), Jyotis (luminous/light), and Sūkṣma (subtle).
Sthūla dhyāna is meditation on a concrete form — deity, symbol, image. Jyotir dhyāna is meditation on inner light. Sūkṣma dhyāna is formless meditation, on the essence.
This progression reflects the yogi’s path: from external to internal, from concrete to abstract, from form to essence.
