Ṣaṣṭhopadeśaḥ (Dhyāna) · Verse 3
स्थूलं ध्यानं प्रवक्ष्यामि योगिनां सुखसाधनम् | मूर्तिं ध्यायेद्यथान्यायं देवतायाः समाहितः ||
sthūlaṃ dhyānaṃ pravakṣyāmi yogināṃ sukhasādhanam | mūrtiṃ dhyāyed yathānyāyaṃ devatāyāḥ samāhitaḥ ||
Sthūla dhyāna — gross meditation. The practitioner clearly visualizes a divine form, typically the deity of their choosing.
“According to the rules” (yathā-nyāyam) indicates there are specific methods: size, position, details of the image. The visualization must be precise and complete.
This meditation is a “facilitator of happiness” because it works with the concrete, the accessible. For minds attached to the material, it is the natural starting point.
