Dhyāna Dhāraṇā · Dhāraṇā 8
इन्द्रजालमयं विश्वमथवा चित्रकर्मवत् । भ्रमद्वा ध्यायतः सर्वं पश्यतश्च सुखोदयः ॥
indrajālamayaṃ viśvam athavā citrakarmavat | bhramad vā dhyāyataḥ sarvaṃ paśyataś ca sukhodayaḥ ||
The universe is like an illusion, or like a painting, or a whirlwind. Meditating thus upon all, and seeing thus, happiness arises.
Eighth technique. Bhairava offers three metaphors for contemplating the world: indrajāla — Indra’s net, a magical illusion. Citrakarmavat — like a painting, a work of art. Bhramat — like a whirlwind, something spinning without fixed substance.
None of these metaphors deny the world. They recontextualize it. The world remains — with its forms, colors, dramas — but is perceived as the playful display of consciousness. Like a magic trick that fascinates precisely because we know it is magic.
Paśyataḥ sukhodayaḥ — for one who sees thus, happiness (sukha) arises. Not the happiness that depends on things going well. The happiness born of seeing the playful nature of reality. Suffering comes from taking the show as absolute. Freedom comes from seeing it as what it is.
