Prakaraṇa 4 · Verse 12
चेतसैव हि दुःखानि भोगांश् च सुखिनो विदुः, तस्मात् चेतस आत्मानं कुर्यान् निश्चलं मुनिः
cetasaiva hi duḥkhāni bhogāṃś ca sukhino viduḥ, tasmāt cetasa ātmānaṃ kuryān niścalaṃ muniḥ
Through the mind, sufferings and pleasures are known; therefore, the sage must make his mind unwavering.
Yoga epistemology posits that all knowledge of pleasure and pain is mediated by the mind. There is no direct access to the vastu—the thing-in-itself—apart from cetana. Such mediation is not a defect but an inherent condition; the problem arises only when mediation is conflated with the object, the map with the territory. The *
