Navama-prakaraṇam (Samādhi) · Verse 8

इडा वामे तु संस्थाप्या दक्षिणे पिङ्गला स्मृता । मध्ये सुषुम्ना या नाडी ब्रह्मद्वारं तु सा स्मृता ॥

iḍā vāme tu saṃsthāpyā dakṣiṇe piṅgalā smṛtā | madhye suṣumnā yā nāḍī brahmadvāraṃ tu sā smṛtā ||

This verse establishes a precise anatomical and mnemonic framework for understanding the relationship between the three nāḍī channels. The placement of Iḍā “on the left” and Piṅgalā “on the right” is not merely a spatial description but a method for cultivating awareness—a practice of consciously directing attention towards the left and right sides of the body. The designation of Suṣumnā as the “middle” nāḍī and, crucially, as “the gate of Brahman” elevates it to a symbolic location of profound significance. This suggests that suṣumnā represents the direct path to realization, the channel through which prāṇa ascends to unite the individual ātman with the universal Brahman. The act of “remembering” these positions—’स्मृता’—is thus a key component of the yogic practice, a constant refinement of focus aimed at stabilizing consciousness and facilitating the ascent of kuṇḍalinī.
