Arjuna Viṣāda Yoga · Verse 44
"उत्सन्नकुलधर्माणां मनुष्याणां जनार्दन | नरकेऽनियतं वासो भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुम"
"utsanna-kula-dharmāṇāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ janārdana | narake 'niyataṃ vāso bhavatīty anuśuśruma"
We have heard, oh Janārdana, that for men whose family duties are destroyed, there is indefinite residence in hell
The argument is based on traditional authority: anuśuśruma (we have heard successively, transmitted orally) — the śruti (revealed hearing) of the dharma-śāstra. It is not Arjuna’s invention but received knowledge.
Utsanna (spilled, scattered, destroyed) is more intense than simply “lost.” The spilled kuladharmāḥ cannot be contained. The punishment is aniyata (not-limited, indefinite) — without end date, perpetual residence in narake (the dark, hell).
Janārdana, for the third time, suggests that Arjuna seeks in Kṛṣṇa an ally against adharma, without understanding that his own renunciation might be the true adharma.
